Steve Edward Duren, known to the world as Blackie Lawless, was born on 4 September 1956 in Tampa, Florida, and this year he celebrates his 70th birthday. As the founder, vocalist and last remaining original member of W.A.S.P., Lawless became one of the most controversial and theatrical figures to emerge from the Los Angeles glam metal scene of the early 1980s, building a career on shock imagery, raw riffs and a stage show that regularly landed the band in headlines for reasons that had little to do with the music itself.
Lawless formed W.A.S.P. in 1982 after stints in bands including Sister and a brief membership in a pre-fame version of the New York Dolls’ orbit. The band’s self-titled debut and singles like “Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)” made them a lightning rod for censorship campaigns in the mid-1980s, most notably becoming one of the central targets of the Parents Music Resource Center. That notoriety, however, often overshadowed Lawless’ genuine songwriting instincts, which would later flourish on more ambitious records such as “The Crimson Idol”.
Over four decades, Lawless steered W.A.S.P. through numerous lineup changes while remaining the band’s sole constant, writing, producing and increasingly performing most of the instrumentation on later albums himself. His evolution from shock-rock provocateur to a more introspective, even openly Christian songwriter in later years surprised longtime fans, but it never fully replaced the pyrotechnics and codpiece-era theatrics that made W.A.S.P. a fixture of MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” era.
Lawless’ influence is often cited by later generations of hard rock and metal performers who point to W.A.S.P.’s uncompromising stage presence as a blueprint for extremity in live performance. Despite health struggles in recent years that forced the postponement of certain tour dates, Lawless has continued to lead W.A.S.P. on the road, with the band’s live show remaining one of the most physically demanding in the genre.
Turning 70 finds Blackie Lawless still very much active in a career that spans the birth of glam metal, the PMRC wars, and multiple stylistic reinventions. Few frontmen from his generation have managed to remain as consistently visible, and his birthday serves as a reminder of just how long W.A.S.P.’s shadow has stretched across heavy metal’s history.
