‘Apocalyptica’ have released “Upperhand,” the official theme song for Finnish game studio Remedy Entertainment’s newly released Control Resonant, featuring ‘Katrine Stenbekk‘, vocalist of Norwegian alternative folk band ‘Kalandra‘. The single arrives alongside an official music video directed by ‘Jens de Vos’.
Stenbekk’s ethereal vocals and ‘Apocalyptica’s’ melancholic but robust sound formed a combination that perfectly fits the theme of tension between fear and discovery at the heart of Control Resonant. The song is based on the instrumental main theme of the video game, which stems from the game’s paranormal and restless world, colored in shades of shadows.
‘Eicca Toppinen’ explained the origins of the track:
“The first version of Upperhand was written as the intro music for the game’s opening scene. It reflects the main character’s restless feelings as he moves towards the unknown. I wanted to expand it into a full song and add lyrics, and we were really lucky to have Kalandra’s Katrine with her unique voice to take the song in the direction it was meant to go.”

Toppinen elaborated on the creative process:
“This song combines many of the unique characteristics of Apocalyptica, and adapting them to serve the world of CONTROL was a challenging, yet inspiring and rewarding journey. I truly hope that CONTROL and Apocalyptica fans find this as special as we do.”
Control Resonant is the latest release from Remedy Entertainment, the Finnish game studio behind internationally acclaimed titles. The game’s shadowy, paranormal world provided the perfect backdrop for ‘Apocalyptica’s’ signature cinematic sound.
