Dean Albert Maury Cazares, known to the metal world as Dino Cazares, was born on 2 September 1966 in El Centro, California, and this year the Fear Factory guitarist turns 60. As a co-founder and the band’s chief riff architect, Cazares helped define industrial metal as a genre in its own right, pairing machine-tight rhythm playing with a mechanised, dystopian aesthetic that few guitarists of his generation could match.

Cazares’ path into music began with a Greyhound bus ticket. At just seventeen, he left El Centro for Los Angeles with nothing but a guitar in one hand and a suitcase in the other, determined to play in a heavy metal band. After a brief stint in the grindcore act Excruciating Terror, he met vocalist Burton C. Bell in 1989, and together with drummer Raymond Herrera they formed a group originally called Ulceration, which was renamed Fear Factory the following year.

Fear Factory’s 1995 album “Demanufacture” is widely regarded as the moment Cazares’ guitar style crystallised into something genuinely new, a palm-muted, percussive attack that mimicked the precision of machinery itself. Cazares has since traced that signature sound back to a single source of inspiration, recalling in a 2022 interview that everything clicked the moment he first heard the “machine gun” riffing on Metallica’s “One”, a technique he then pushed to a more extreme, mechanised conclusion within Fear Factory’s sound.

Beyond his main band, Cazares became one of metal’s most influential gear innovators, helping popularise the use of seven and eight-string guitars at a time when six strings tuned low were considered the outer limit of heaviness. He was also an early and vocal adopter of digital amp modelling technology, a move that put him ahead of a wider industry shift years later, all while juggling side projects including Brujeria, Divine Heresy and Asesino alongside his work in Fear Factory.

Sixty years on from his birth, Cazares remains one of the most recognisable guitarists in extreme metal, still active with Fear Factory and still shaping the conversation around guitar tone and technology in heavy music. His birthday is a fitting moment to reflect on a career built from a one-way bus ticket and an uncompromising vision of what metal could sound like.
